MCI aims to bring back 5000 NRI doctors in 5 years
Amendments in the Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations will open the floodgates for hundreds of non-resident Indian (NRI) doctors to come back to their roots. MCI has eased the cross-over rules and has set a target of bringing back 5,000 Indian doctors, including teachers, settled in US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
MCI has removed the main bottleneck by recognising the postgraduation and other degrees of these specific countries where health facilities are supposedly best in the world and the education was done in English medium. They have the choice of coming back to teach in a private or government college as well as work in a private or government hospital. Also, they can set up their own medical colleges and hospitals. Indian doctors in these countries are the richest segment even among NRIs.
Apart from accepting foreign degrees, the MCI has made special provision so that foreign experience is also counted. For example, if there is a professor of medicine in a US university, with the required number of years of experience to become one in India, he can be hired as a professor by any medical college in India. This will bring about a huge change not only in the cities but also in the countryside, if the doctors returning home really go deeper into their roots. Besides, MCI also sees the possibility of groups of NRI doctors coming back and pooling in their resources to build hospitals and medical colleges.

Just to update Dr.Majid and every one else visiting the blog, MCI has not yet recognised foreign qualifications. The ministry of health seemed to have published very hastily in the Gazette of India (in March 2008)that they have consulted with MCI and have taken the decision. However it later transpired that the then Minister for Health, Mr Anumani Ramdas had published the news before waiting for the MCI’s committe member’s suggestions. The ministry of health had later been asked to withdraw the article from their website which for some reason was not removed, and to confuse every one gets higlighted as a “new” publication. The only hope for recognition of foreign degrees is NCHRH – I donot think MCI will make any further changes before they pack up their offices to leave.

Recently the President of the MCI Dr Ketan Desai himself had said at some function that the MCI would recognise the Postgraduate qualifications and experience obtained in select foreign countries. However this has not yet made its way into the 3rd Schedule of the act. It is true that the Govt of India has recognised the postgraduate qualifactions vide Gazette notification. It remains to be seen how the MCI is going to go about this matter.I intend to write to the MCI about my case to find out whether my postgraduate qualification is recognised or nor

First the MCI should give unconditional recognition to DNB to overcome the shortage.

Its just stupid to think that Indian PG doctors from UK,USA,Canada,Aus and NZ will leave their well paid jobs over there and come to save people in India. The government should recognize PG from all countries or at least setup screening exams for foreign Post graduates.

that”s a very good idea ,but it should be implemented properly
